CONWAY, S.C. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell at Coastal Carolina, 22-10, on Wednesday afternoon.
Although W&M (2-5) jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the contest, CCU (3-4) utilized a 10-1 run to build an eight-goal margin midway through the second quarter.
W&M responded by tallying the final five goals of the second quarter to trail by just three at halftime, 12-9. However, CCU outscored the Tribe 10-1 following the intermission to earn the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Senior
Grace Ahonen led the Tribe offensively with a career-high five points (3g, 2a), while classmate
Belle Martire (3g) and freshman
Sam Van Gieson (3g) also recorded hat tricks. Freshman
Serena Jacobs also came up big offensively with three points (1g, 2a).
Junior
Sarah Cipolla threatened her own single-game school record in draw controls and finish with nine, a figure that ties for third at W&M. Sophomore
Caroline Hertzberg and freshman
Ainsley Huizenga posted four draw controls apiece.
Inside the Numbers
W&M owned an advantage on the draw circle (20-16) but was outshot, 34-27, including a 26-22 margin in shots on goal.
CCU totaled more ground balls (17-13) and committed five fewer turnovers (14-19).
The Opposition
Megan Bozzi led the Chants with six points (4g, 2a), while Lauren Cremen (3g, 1a), Avery Snyder (3g), Kayla Downey (2g, 3a) and Avery McIlwaine (2g, 2a) all provided offensive production.
McIlwaine also totaled a team-high four draw controls, while goalie Claire Martell posted 12 saves and a .545 save percentage.
Notes
With her three goals, Martire moved into fourth on W&M's all-time goals list (133) … It marked her fourth hat trick of the season … Van Gieson's goals were the first of her career …
