WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team was edged by American, 10-8, at Martin Family Stadium on Friday evening.
After trailing the Eagles (4-3) at halftime, 6-3, W&M (2-4) scored the first four goals following intermission to build a 7-6 lead early in the fourth quarter.
However, after trading goals, AU closed the game with three unanswered scores to secure the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Senior
Lauren Russell led the Tribe with four goals, while classmate
Belle Martire added a pair of goals.
Junior
Sarah Cipolla also found the back of the cage and totaled a team-high five draw controls, while junior
Caroline Donovan recorded three caused turnovers and a career-high five ground balls.
Freshman goalie
Elise Palmer finished the contest with 10 saves and a .500 save percentage.
Inside the Numbers
W&M owned advantages in draw controls (12-10) and ground balls (22-20), while American outshot the Tribe, 28-23, including a 20-15 margin in shots on goals.
AU also committed four fewer turnovers (22-18).
The Opposition
Emma Vinall led American with four goals, while Kendall Goldblum (2g) and Maddy Spratt (1g, 1a) totaled two points apiece. Vinall and Goldblum also added five and four draw controls, respectively.
Stefanie Walsh contributed team highs in assists (4) and caused turnovers (3).
Notes
With her two goals, Martire moved into a tie for fifth on W&M's all-time goals list (130) … Despite the loss, W&M still controls the all-time series with AU, 12-1.
