WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team earned a convincing 18-11 victory against Old Dominion at Martin Family Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Although W&M (2-2) led by just one goal at halftime, 7-6, the Tribe utilized a 7-0 run to start the third quarter en route to opening up a comfortable 14-6 advantage.
The Monarchs (1-3) briefly narrowed the margin to five, 16-11, late in the fourth quarter, but W&M punched in the final two goals to secure the lopsided non-conference win.
Tribe Standouts
Senior
Belle Martire scored a season-high seven goals, which ranks tied for the fifth-best performance in school history, with a pair of caused turnovers, a draw control and two ground balls.
Junior
Sarah Cipolla recorded a career-high eight points (5g, 3a), which ranks tied for seventh in school history, and a team-high seven draw controls with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Senior
Grace Ahonen found the back of the cage twice, while freshman
Margaret Mooney tallied six draw controls.
Freshman goalie
Elise Palmer totaled 12 saves and a .522 save percentage.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot ODU, 47-28, including a 31-23 margin in shots on goal.
The Tribe also dominated the draw circle, 21-12, and owned an edge in ground balls, 30-28.
The Opposition
Tess Meurling came off the bench to post a hat trick for the Monarchs, while Moira Olexa and Jessica Pisani tallied two goals apiece.
Notes
Martire has recorded hat tricks in three consecutive games, totaling14 goals during the recent stretch … Martire now ranks sixth at W&M in career goals (127) and 10th in career points (147) … W&M improves to 39-12 all-time against ODU and has won 12 of the last 15 meetings … The Tribe also improves to 40-16 all-time versus teams currently in the American Athletic Conference.
