WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis senior
Mila Saric rallied for a top-80 nationally-ranked singles victory in the Tribe's narrow setback to Charlotte on Saturday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Trailing 4-0 in the third set to No. 79-ranked Margaux Maquet, the Tribe senior mounted a strong rally, winning seven of the final eight games to pull out the come-from-behind three-set win. It marked the fifth nationally-ranked win of her career. She improved to 14-3 overall and 4-1 at the top singles post. After dropping the opening set, 6-1, to Maquet, Saric answered with a 7-5 win in the second before the third-set rally.
Freshman
Hedda Gurholt continued her winning way at No. 2, posting her 10th-straight triumph. She upended Ruxi Schech, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 to improve to 15-4 overall and 6-0 in dual-match competition. Schech finished last spring in the national top-125 and earned All-Conference USA First Team honors.
The 49ers took a close double point to start the match, thanks to a tiebreaker win at No. 1. After a Charlotte win on line three, the initial point of the match came down to the top two spots, which were either in a tiebreaker or looked headed for one. The 49ers No. 1 team of
Maquet and Lucia Quiterio outlasted Saric and Gurholt, 7-6 (4), to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Charlotte countered Gurholt's straight-set win at No. 2 with victories at No. 5 and No. 6. The balance of the match came down to a trio of three-set tilts at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4. Saric pulled out the lone victory for the Green and Gold as the 49ers came back for wins on lines three and four.
Up Next: The Tribe returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 when it welcomes Penn to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
