Women's Tennis Drops a Close One to Penn

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis battled back in singles thanks to wins from freshmen Emma Fernald and Ine Stange on Saturday afternoon against Penn at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The balance of the match came down four three-set affairs, and the visiting Quakers won three of the four to pull out a 5-2 victory.

Penn (5-3) opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to winning the doubles point and a victory at the No. 2 singles spot.

Strange got the Tribe on the board with a straight-set win at No. 5. She edged Penn's Saige Roshkoff, 7-6 (6), 6-4, to narrow the gap to 2-1. Stange improved to 7-4 overall and 3-3 in dual-match competition.

Despite dropping the opening set to Eileen Wang, 6-4, Fernald rallied for her 10th victory of the season to draw the Tribe even. She dropped just five games over the final two sets to pull out a  6-3, 6-2 triumph. The first three-set match of the contest came off the board to the Tribe and drew the home team even at two.

At No. 3 and No. 4, juniors Elisa Van Meeteren and Raffaela Alhach both took the opening set from the Quaker opponents before heading to a decisive third.

Penn's Gavriella Smith put the visitors back in front with a three-set victory on line four.

At the top spot, senior Mila Saric, fresh off her fifth nationally-ranked win last week, rallied from a set deficit to force a decisive third against another nationally-ranked foe. Penn's Juliia Bryzgalova, who is ranked No. 86 nationally, won the opening set in a tiebreaker before Saric claimed the second, 6-4. In the third, the nationally-ranked Penn player outlasted Saric, 6-3, to cement the Penn win.

Up Next: The Tribe returns to action on Saturday, March 5, when it hosts Liberty at 10 a.m. The contest is slated to be played outdoors in Williamsburg, weather permitting.
