WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis had its three-match winning streak snapped at the hands of Big Ten foe Maryland, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Junior
Raffaela Alhach (No. 5) and freshman
Hedda Gurholt rallied to claim three-set singles wins for the Tribe (3-2) points.
The Terps (7-1) claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to take a 1-0 lead. It marked the first time in five tries this season that W&M failed to take the initial point of the match.
Maryland secured its fifth-straight win with straight-set victories at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.
Alhach bounced back after falling in the opening set to Mary Brumfield, 6-2, by claiming the second, 6-4. With the team result already decided, the pair squared off in a super breaker third set. Alhach came back from an early 4-2 deficit and won the final three points on the way to a 10-7 win in the breaker. It was her fourth win in a row and her 11th overall on the year.
After dropping the opening set in close fashion, 6-4, Gurholt rallied for her ninth win in a row. The Tribe rookie did not drop a game in the second set against Marta Perez Mur before claiming the final two games in the third to take a 7-5 win. She improved to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in dual-match play.
Up Next: The Tribe returns to action on Saturday morning when it welcomes Charlotte to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The contest gets underway at 11 a.m.
