WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team fell to No. 6 Duke, 23-5, in its home opener at Martin Family Stadium on Friday evening.
The contest was knotted at 3-3 midway through the opening quarter, but Duke (3-0) utilized a 10-0 run to build a significant advantage.
The Blue Devils then limited the Tribe (1-2) to just one goal during the final 30 minutes to secure the non-conference victory.
Tribe Standouts
Senior
Belle Martire led the Tribe with four points (3g, 1a) and recorded her hat trick on just three shots. She also added a pair of draw controls.
Senior
Grace Ahonen and freshman
Ainsley Huizenga also found the back of the cage, while Huizenga's stat line also included a game-high four draw controls.
Sophomore
Caroline Hertzberg came up big with three draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover, while freshman goalie
Elise Palmer posted 12 saves and three ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
Duke outshot the Tribe, 47-13, including a 36-10 margin on goal.
The Blue Devils also owned advantages in ground balls (21-15) and draw controls (18-12).
The Opposition
Catriona Barry led Duke with six points (5g, 1a), while Katie DeSimone posted five points (4g, 1a).
Maddie Jenner led all players with a game-high 11 draw controls.
Notes
Huizenga's goal was the first of her career … With her four-point performance, Martire now ranks seventh at W&M in career goals (120) and tied for 14th in career points (140) … The effort marked Martire's second-consecutive hat trick after she posted four goals at Richmond in W&M's last contest.
