Men's Tennis Battles in Setback to Old Dominion

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – In a series that has featured numerous 4-3 score lines through the year, Wednesday night's match-up between William & Mary and Old Dominion at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center was another heated tussle.

Despite battling back in singles action, the Tribe had its three-match winning streak snapped by the Monarchs, 4-1. Senior Jack Kelly provided W&M with its lone point with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 4.

Old Dominion (4-3) picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Joseph Brailovsky and graduate student Chen Ruo rolled to their fifth win in a row, upending Younes Lalami and Oliver Nolan, 6-2, at No. 2. The point came down to the top spot where the Monarch team of Luca Maldener and Yevhen Sirous won the final two games to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

After a win at No. 6 increased the Monarchs' lead, Kelly got the Tribe on the board. He dropped the opening set to Lalami, 6-3, but responded to win the second, 6-3, and claimed the match with a 6-2 triumph in the third. Kelly won his third in a row to improve to 4-3 in singles action.

ODU responded with a win at No. 5, before Maldener edged graduate student Harrison Brown in three sets at No. 2 to clinch the win.

Along with Kelly and Brown, graduate student Sebastian Quiros battled into a third-set at No. 3 before his match was abandoned.

Junior George Davis turned in a strong performance at No. 1 against a top-50 nationally-ranked opponent before his match was abandoned. He dropped a nail-biting 7-6 (8) tiebreaker in the first set to No. 40-ranked Francois Le Tallec. The Monarch junior jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before Davis won three of four games to close within 4-3 when the match was abandoned.

Up Next: The Tribe returns to action on Friday evening with another in-state foe in Richmond. The contest carries a 5 p.m. start time at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
