Martire’s Four-Goal Performance Leads Lax in Setback at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team suffered its first setback of the season with a 19-10 loss at Richmond on Tuesday evening.
 
The contest was knotted at 5-5 midway through the second quarter before the Spiders (2-0) utilized an 11-1 run that spanned the second and third frames to build a comfortable lead.
 
Although W&M (1-1) outscored UR during the remainder of the contest, it was unable to narrow the margin to fewer than eight goals down the stretch.
 
Tribe Standouts
Senior Belle Martire led the Tribe with four goals to go with four draw controls and a ground ball, while junior Caroline Donovan (2g) and freshman Delaney Roth (1g, 1a) added two points apiece. Donovan's stat line also included a game-high three caused turnovers and a ground ball.
 
Freshman Paige Gilbert contributed four draw controls and a ground ball, while senior Grace Ahonen and sophomore Courtney Vasquenza posted three ground balls apiece. Sophomore Caroline Hertzberg also came up big with three draw controls and a caused turnover.
 
Freshman goalie Elise Palmer posted her second consecutive double-digit save performance with 12 stops.
 
Inside the Numbers
Richmond outshot the Tribe, 39-25, which included a 31-20 advantage in shots on goal.
 
The Spiders also held an edge in draw controls (18-15) and ground balls (23-16), while it committed five fewer turnovers (19-14).

The Opposition
Colleen Quinn led UR with eight points (6g, 2a), while Arden Tierney (2g, 4a) and Hannah Custer (3g, 1a) also came up big offensively.
 
Maggie O'Brien posted a team-high four draw controls, while goalie Delaney Galvin recorded 10 saves and a team-best four ground balls.  
 
Notes
Freshmen Justyce Barber and Margaret Mooney scored their first career goals for the Tribe … Palmer is averaging 14.0 saves per game through the first two contests … With her four-goal performance, Martire now ranks tied for 11th at W&M in career goals (117) and 17th in career points (136) … Despite the setback, W&M controls the all-time series against Richmond, 44-14-1, while it is 75-27-1 versus teams currently in the Atlantic-10.
