WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – After establishing himself as one of the nation's top linebackers, William & Mary sophomore
John Pius was selected as a
finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is annually presented to the national defensive player of the year in college football's Division I subdivision.
Pius is one of 30 standouts who garnered the honor.
The Arlington, Va., native currently ranks third nationally in sacks (11.5) and fifth in TFL (19), both figures that lead the Colonial Athletic Association. He needs just a half sack to equal W&Ms single-season school record.
A two-time CAA Defensive Player of the Week, Pius also leads the team in tackles (69) and quarterback hurries (12).
A national media panel will select the Buchanan Award winner, with voting based on the regular season. The recipient will be announced at the FCS National Awards banquet on Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas – on the eve of the national championship game.
The Buchanan Award, first presented in 1995 and in its 28th season, is named for legendary defensive lineman Junious "Buck" Buchanan, who starred at Grambling State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, Jared Allen and Arthur Moats.
Following a bye this week, W&M's quest for a national championship will continue when it hosts the winner of Gardner-Webb/Eastern Kentucky at Zable Stadium on Dec. 3 at 2 p.m.
