CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 19 William & Mary field hockey battled through over 50 minutes of scoreless play with No. 7-ranked Virginia on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers scored three time in the final 10 minutes to pull out the 3-0 win.
W&M (7-4, 1-0 CAA) played its sixth match of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Virginia (7-3) finally broke through in the fourth quarter, scoring twice in less than a minute. UVa's Dani Mendez-Trendler ended the scoreless stalemate with a shot to the upper corner of the net in the 52nd minute. Less than a minute later, the Hoos doubled their lead on a penalty stroke from Taryn Tkachuk.
Meghen Hengerer provided the final goal of the day in the 58th minute, scoring off a rebound.
