WEST POINT, N.Y. – The William & Mary men's gymnastics team opened the 2022 season with a fifth-place finish at the West Point Open hosted by Army on Friday evening.
Penn State claimed the team title with a 393.65 and was followed by Navy (391.45), Army (388.65), Springfield (378.55), W&M (362.4) and Temple (337.05).
Highlighting the Tribe's individual performances were two gymnasts who combined to earn three spots in Saturday's individual event finals (7 p.m.).
Christian Marsh advanced on pommel horse and parallel bars, while
Sam Lee qualified with a top-eight finish on vault.
Marsh was W&M's top all-arounder and placed sixth with a 75.5.
Event Recaps
Floor, 63.2 – Harrington led the Tribe on floor with a 13.1, while
Aidan Cuy (12.75) and
Zachary Patrick (12.7) also contributed to the team score.
Pommel Horse, 59.0 – Marsh's sixth-place finish (13.1) was W&M's top performance on pommel horse, while Lee posted a 12.3.
Rings, 59.15 –
Zachary Patrick (12.7), Marsh (12.5) and
Alek Kuzmenchuk (12.0) posted the Tribe's top three scores on rings.
Vault, 67.6 – In addition to advancing to the event finals with an eighth-place finish on vault, Lee's career-high 14.25 tied for the ninth-best score in school history in the event.
Parallel Bars, 58.05 – Marsh finished fifth on parallel bars with a 13.15 to advance to Saturday's finals, while Kuzmenchuk recorded W&M's next-best score in the event with a 12.05.
High Bar, 55.4 – Cuy and Kuzmenchuk tallied the Tribe's top two scores on high bar with a 12.2 and 11.65, respectively.
All-Around – In addition to Marsh's sixth-place finish (75.5), Cuy also competed in all six events and placed eighth with a 71.65.
