Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE,VA.- Julia Brown's 21 kills and eight blocks were not enough as Akron bested the Tribe in a third set thriller Saturday morning in Charlottesville. The Green and Gold will come home with a 2-2 record for next Friday's match with Hampton.
For the second straight day,
Anne Louise Seekford played a large role for the Tribe with six kills and a dozen digs while
Anna Porter led the squad with 14 digs and
Sabrina Malcolm,
Lauren Merrill, and
Claire Farrell all recorded four blocks.
The Zips jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the first set. Despite a couple of blocks from the W&M front line, Akron would extend the lead to 9-4 and the Tribe offense would struggle the entire first set hitting .000 on the way to a 25-11 Akron win.
Akron's offense continued to give W&M fits early in the second stanza breaking out to a 7-3 advantage. After the Zips opened up a sizable lead, the Tribe closed the gap to 15-12. The Green and Gold came back to tie the score 21-21 and a
Julia Brown kill would give the Tribe their first lead with a kill to make it a one-point lead. Tied at 24 a
Sabrina Malcolm kill and an
Anne Louise Seekford ace gave the Tribe a 26-24 win to even the match.
The third opened up with a Brown kill and block followed by a
Sydney Taylor ace to make it 3-0 Tribe. A block from
Claire Farrell would cap a 4-0 late run for W&M to open up an 18-13 edge and Brown would take over late with a kill and block to seal a 25-19 set three win.
Brown's 16th kill of the morning made it 6-4 W&M in the fourth and a kill from Laure Merrill opened up a 11-7 lead. Down 22-18 the Tribe rallied to tie it at 22-22, but Akron pulled away for a 26-24 win to force the fifth set.
In a tight fifth the Tribe would take the first lead at the eight to seven mark. The Tribe would gain a two point advantage before Akron tied the score at 10-10. However the Zips would pull away late taking the final frame 15-12 to seal the match.
Next Up- The Tribe will return home next weekend to open up the team's 50 anniversary season Friday night for a match with Hampton at Kaplan Arena.
