HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior
Diba Nwegbo scored the fastest goal in William & Mary and Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer history, converting just 12 seconds into Saturday's match at Hofstra. The Pride (7-1, 2-1 CAA) though scored twice, six minutes apart in the first half, and Ryan Carmichael scored a natural hat trick, including goals just 35 seconds apart in the second half, to lead the home team to a come-from-behind 4-1 win.
W&M (2-3, 0-2 CAA) struck off the opening kickoff. The ball was played back to junior
Alfredo Bozalongo in the midfield who sent a long ball bounding into the attacking third. Nwegbo got on the end of it, touching around a Hofstra defender and finishing with a long-lining volley into the left side of the goal from 18 yards out.
The Pride scored twice, six minutes apart, to take a 2-1 lead to the locker room. Hendrik Hebbeker scored from distance in the 12th minute, before setting Carmichael free on a breakaway. Carmichael cut back along the top of the penalty area and bent a right-footed strike into the right side of the goal in the 18th minute to give Hofstra the lead for good.
Carmichael added goals just 35 seconds apart in the 75th and 76th minutes to put the game away. Hebbeker again found Carmichael to increase the Pride lead to 3-1 as Carmichael beat a defender at the penalty spot and snuck a shot by
Connor Andrews. As the Tribe pressed to get back in the game, Hofstra caught W&M on the counter. Carmichael beat a Tribe defender to the endline, cut back and then scored just inside the near post to complete the natural hat trick.
