LYNCHBURG, Va. – Despite a stingy defensive effort, No. 12-ranked Liberty scored a goal in each half to down William & Mary field hockey, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Maddie George posted a career-high nine saves in cage, while the Tribe recorded three defensive saves as a team. Senior
Cara Menges tallied two defensive saves, while junior
Rachel Gantz notched the other.
The Flames opened the scoring off a penalty corner in the eighth minute. Maddie Hosler drove and pushed the ball into the boards from in close off a pass from Jill Bolton at the top of the circle.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, W&M nearly drew even in the 37th minute, but
Lily Saunders shot was cleared off the line by Hosler.
Liberty extended its lead to 2-0 just two minutes before the end of the third period. Ashley Dykema drove to the end line and dished to Bolton in front just past George. The Liberty forward finished into an empty cage.
The Flames outshot the Tribe, 23-9, for the game and generated six penalty corners to W&M's two.
