WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior
Lauren Curran drew William & Mary field hockey even with No. 18-ranked Duke at one with a third-quarter goal on Sunday afternoon at Busch Field. The Blue Devils, though, scored twice just two minutes apart in the final period, including the game-winning penalty stroke, to pull out the 3-1 win.
After a scoreless opening 15 minutes in which the Tribe outshot Duke, 4-1, the visitors took the lead into the locker room, scoring with just over a minute remaining in the half. Leah Crouse fed forward to Logan Clouser on the break. The Blue Devil midfielder carried into the area and was able to sneak a shot under a rushing Tribe goalkeeper
Maddie George.
The Tribe answered with less than four minutes left in the third quarter. On the play, junior
Audrey Domovich beat a Duke defender along the right endline and centered a pass to Curran. The Tribe forward collected and spun to gain space before scoring inside the near post to tie the match at one.
In the 52nd minute, the Blue Devils were awarded their second penalty stroke of the match. George stopped a Duke penalty stroke in the opening half, but with just over eight minutes remaining, Lexi Davidson went high to convert and put the visitors back on top.
With the Tribe pressing for an equalizer, Duke scored on the counter 1:17 later to extend its lead to two. Clouser carried the ball into the right endline, centering a pass to Course, who redirected it in for the Blue Devil's third goal of the contest.
Duke outshot W&M, 11-8, on the day, including a 9-5 advantage on attempts on frame. The Tribe generated more penalty corners, 4-3.
George played the opening 56:06 in goal for W&M, finishing with five saves. Senior
Kimi Jones notched a save in the final 3:54. Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch recored four saves on the afternoon.
