Men's Soccer Wins Second-Straight to Open the Season, Shutting Out GW, 1-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Alexander Levengood tallied a first-half goal and the defense registered its second-straight shutout as William & Mary men's soccer topped George Washington, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Martin Family Stadium.

With the victory, the Tribe starts the season 2-0 for the first time since 2010. The Green and Gold registered shutouts in its first two matches for the first time since 1996. During each of those seasons in 1996 and 2010, W&M won the CAA and advanced deep in the NCAA Tournament, going to the quarterfinals and round of 16, respectively.

W&M controlled play for the majority of the opening 45 minutes, holding a 5-1 advantage in shots over George Washington (2-3-1).

The Tribe broke through for the game's lone goal with just under 11 minutes remaining in the opening half on Levengood's first goal of the season. Senior John Eberle did well to keep the ball in along the right sideline and then cut through the GW defense to the center of the pitch, before laying the ball off to junior Diba Nwegbo. The strike touched the ball to his classmate Levengood inside the left side of the box, and the All-CAA performer scored inside the right post.

The Colonials picked up the pressure in the second half, pushing for the equalizer. In total, GW outshot W&M, 7-3, in the second half, but like the Tribe, put just two attempts on frame.

Sophomore goalkeeper Will Stack and the Tribe backline of senior Zachary Hosseinian and sophomores Daniel Salom, Cole Knapp and Joe Core made the first-half goal stand up. Stack made three saves for the Green and Gold to pick up his third career shutout and second to start the season.
