WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary men's soccer suffered its first setback of the 2021 fall season as Northeastern scored twice on set pieces, one in each half, to down the Tribe, 2-1, at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Tribe pulled even in the 59th minute on a penalty kick. Off a corner kick, junior
Alfredo Bozalongo collected the ball on the right side of the 18-yard box and centered a pass to classmate
Diba Nwegbo at the penalty spot. The Tribe striker got a touch to it, but before he could get off a shot was pulled down from behind by a Huskie defender. Junior
Alexander Levengood stepped to the spot and converted to tie the match at one.
Northeastern found the game-winner just eight minutes later off a corner kick of their own. Frederico Tellez served the ball to the backside of the area where Soren Ilsoe chested it down and hammered a shot home from just outside the six-yard box for his second goal of the contest.
W&M had a pair of quality scoring chances, both from Levengood, in the final 20 minutes, but could not find the equalizer. A long clearance out of the back end gave Levengood a 1v1 opportunity in the 71st minute, but Colby Hegarty came off his line to get a paw to it and knock it away.
In the 87th minute off a free kick, Bozalongo lofted a pass to Levengood inside the box. He tried to lift it over a rushing Hegarty, but the Northeastern goalkeeper was able to block it away for one of his seven saves.
W&M dominated possession and the chances in the opening 45 minutes, but Northeastern got on the board first. Off a free kick, Andres Torrealba lofted a ball into the penalty area and Ilsoe was the first player to it, flipping up header over the top of Tribe goalkeeper
Will Stack and into the upper left corner of the goal from 10 yards out.
In total, the Tribe outshot Northeastern, 7-2, in the opening 45 minutes, including a 4-1 advantage on goal. W&M also held a 63%-37% cushion in possession in the first half.
