DEKALB, ILL.- Backed by another tremendous effort from graduate student
Julia Brown, William & Mary swept Air Force 3-0 Saturday morning to pull to 2-0 on the season. The sweep was the second in two days for the Tribe who opened the season with two 3-0 victories for the first time since the 1994 season.
Brown led all players with 11 kills hitting .417 in the match on her way to being named to the all-tournament team. Fellow Illinois native
Amy Schwem joined Brown on the all-tournament team dishing out 14 assists in the win.
Lauren Merrill was outstanding, providing seven kills and a pair of blocks and for the second straight match
Anna Porter led all players with 10 digs.
Anne Louise Seekford planted six kills and
Kaitlyn Ferguson and
Sabrina Malcolm each added five kills.
In the opening set, Air Force took the first four of five points, but the Tribe would rally to take a 7-6 lead.. Facing a 23-20 deficit, the Tribe took four straight points to pull ahead. For the second straight day 25 points would not be enough to separate the Tribe and the opposition in the opening set and it would take another Brown kill and an ace from Porter to give the Tribe a 27-25 opening set win.
In a tight second frame, the Tribe would break a 7-7 tie with a trio of points to open up a 10-7 lead. The set would stay close as the Green and Gold held a 19-18 lead and they would pull ahead late with four straight points to close out a 25-20 second stanza.
Tied at three early in the third set, William & Mary would take four straight points to break open an 8-4 advantage. Air Force rallied to tie the match at 12-12 and again at 19-19. Two kills from Brown gave the Tribe a two point edge. William & Mary would shut the door on a 25-20 set win punctuated by back to back blocks from Brown and Merrill giving the Tribe a 3-0 sweep.
