The William & Mary men's swimming team sent its two seniors out in style on Saturday afternoon, downing Davidson 137-124 in a close-fought match. The Tribe improved to 2-1 on the year with the win and clinched its program-record 11th-straight non-losing season, while the Wildcats start the year at 0-1. The meet was conducted in a telegraphic fashion, with both teams swimming in their own pools on the same meet schedule, and exchanging results after each event.
Before the meet, W&M honored its two seniors,
Christopher Pfuhl (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Jake Kealy (Wilton, Conn.) as they prepared for their final college home meet. Once the swimming started, it was Kealy who led the way for his teammates, winning a team-best two events to key the victory. His first win was also the first for W&M, as he took the 200 free in a lifetime-best 1:41.53. That was the first of four straight wins for the Tribe, and the first of three events in a row that W&M went 1-2 in the event, a key strategy that would repeat itself six times out of the seven events that the Green and Gold won.
After the 200 free, W&M also went 1-2 in the 100 back, led by junior
Jack Galbraith (Vienna, Va.) in 51.63 seconds, and also in the 100 breast, with sophomore
Kyle Demers (Virginia Beach, Va.) stopping the clock in 56.14 seconds. His classmate
Noah Fields (Williamsburg, Va.) made it four wins in a row with his time of 1:52.01 in the 200 fly. Davidson came back to win the 50 free, but sophomore
John O'Hara (Fredericksburg, Va.) instigated another 1-2 finish in the 100 free in 46.80 seconds.
The Wildcats, down at that point with eight out of 14 events complete, began climbing back with three straight wins in the 200 back, 200 breast, and the 500 free, taking the lead 104-102 following the latter. Once again, W&M turned to its senior leadership, and Kealy responded with another lifetime-best and a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 50.20 seconds. Freshman
Cole Younger (Newport News, Va.) then provided the clincher in the very next event, the 200 IM, swimming 1:55.59 for the win and another 1-2 finish to put W&M in front 131-113 and put the meet out of reach en route to the 137-124 win.
William & Mary will wrap up the regular season next week with a road trip down to Old Dominion. The Tribe and the Monarchs will face off on Saturday, March 13, starting at 10:00 a.m.
