The Tournament
W&M has been hosting a spring men's golf tournament since 1978, and this will be the fifth time that the event has been held at the Golden Horseshoe. In 2001, 2002, and 2005, the tournament was held on the Green Course, before returning in 2019 on the Gold Course. The Gold Course also hosted the NCAA Men's Golf Championships in 2007, and the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Championship in 2008.
This year, the tournament will include 54 holes, with teams playing 36 holes beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Monday and another 18 hole shotgun start beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The course will play par-70 and 6,799 yards, and was renovated in 2017 by Rees Jones to update a classic 1963 Robert Trent Jones design.
In addition to William & Mary, 15 other teams will be playing the event, including Georgetown, Richmond, St. Joseph's, Old Dominion, VCU, St. Bonaventure's, Longwood, Radford, Temple, Drexel, George Washington, Delaware, St. Francis (Pa.), Washington & Lee, and Howard. Especially of note, the Howard Bison will be playing its first tournament in program history.
Scouting the Tribe
W&M is coming off two solid showings to open the 2021 season, finishing ninth at the Ross Collegiate Classic and fifth at the Bash at the Beach. For this week, the Tribe will have a full five-player scoring line-up, as well as three individuals. W&M will be looking for its fourth team title in the event, and first since head coach
Tim Pemberton '05 led the 2005 squad to the championship.
The scoring line-up will feature each of W&M's top five players through the first two tournaments. Sophomore
Jimmy Taylor (Alexandria, Va.) is averaging 73.67 strokes per round, and had a ninth-place finish in the season opener earlier this month. Junior
Matthew Feinstein (McLean, Va.) is just behind him with a 73.83 average, and has also posted a 104-37 (.738) head-to-head record. Grad transfer
Preston Ball (Raleigh, N.C.) will be just a few thousand feet away from his normal daily home, the William & Mary Law School, and will be looking to improve up his 75.33 stroke average. Sophomore
Trevor Binau (Columbus, Ohio) is also averaging 75.33 strokes per round, and has the Tribe's best single round so far in 2021 with a 69 (-3) coming in the final round at the Ross Collegiate Classic.
Rounding out the scoring line-up will be freshman
Matt Epstein (Hopkinton, Mass.), who made his collegiate debut at the Bash at the Beach with a 231 (+15), averaging 77.0 per round. Playing as individuals will be junior
Jack Grier (Chicago, Ill.), who also played at the Ross Collegiate Classic, as well as freshman
Will Rieck (Franklin, Tenn.) and grad student
Garrett deFisser (Gilbert, Ariz.).
