Britt, Solomon Homer In Tribe Loss

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- William & Mary got home runs from senior Tyler Solomon and freshman Nic Britt but it was not enough to overcome an offensive onslaught from Charlotte as the 49ers took the final match of the three-game set 20-4 Sunday afternoon.

After a scoreless first, Charlotte would use a Craig Kuechel two-run home run to open up the scoring in the second. Will Butcher would follow with a solo homer in the fourth to give the 49ers a 3-0 advantage.

Tribe first baseman Tyler Solomon would put the Green and Gold on the board with a solo blast to deep left center cutting the Charlotte lead to 3-1 in the top half of the fifth. It was the senior's fourth home run in just 20 career games with William & Mary, joining the Tribe prior to last year's shortened season.

In the bottom half of the fifth the 49ers would break the game open and not look back. Charlotte scored six in the fifth, three in the sixth, five in the seventh, and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Tribe's offense continued the early season struggles but did find bright spots from reserves in the late innings. Joe Delossantos smoked a leadoff double to left in the seventh inning but was stranded on the bases.

In the eighth inning Ryan McKenna roped a double to right and David Hogarth followed with a walk. Freshman infielder Nic Britt stepped to the plate and hammered a three-run shot over the left field wall for his first collegiate hit.

William & Mary will look to bounce back with a trio of games against in-state rivals next weekend. The Tribe will host Richmond at Plumeri Park for the home-opener next Friday at 4:00 p.m. and stay in Williamsburg for a matchup with George Mason on Saturday. Coach Murphy's team will finish the weekend with a Sunday matinee with VCU in Richmond.
