DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore standout
Sarah Cipolla scored a career-high four goals, but the William & Mary lacrosse team opened its season with a 24-8 setback at No. 15/11 Duke on Wednesday afternoon.
Although W&M (0-1) trailed by just five at halftime, Duke (2-0) outscored the Tribe 12-1 in the second half to secure the victory.
Tribe Standouts
In addition to posting a career-high four goals, Cipolla added four ground balls and three draw controls.

Lauren Russell and freshman
Kathleen Cozzi added two goals apiece.
Inside the Numbers
Although the ground balls were even (22-22), the Blue Devils outshot the Tribe 42-22 and owned a 23-9 advantage in draw controls.
The Tribe committed just two more turnover than Duke (13-11).
The Opposition
Maddie Jenner led the Blue Devils with four goals and a game-high 16 draw controls, while Katie Cronin also found the back of the cage four times.

A trio of freshmen started in their collegiate debuts for W&M – Cozzi,
Caroline Hertzberg and
Courtney Vasquenza … Despite the loss, W&M owns a 35-16-1 all-time record in season openers … The contest was originally scheduled to be played Thursday afternoon but was moved up to avoid expected inclement weather in the Durham area.
