Belle Martire’s Eight-Goal Effort Leads W&M Lax Past ODU, 19-11

NORFOLK, Va. – Belle Martire nearly equaled her own single-game school record and scored a game-high eight goals to lead the William & Mary lacrosse team to a 19-11 victory at Old Dominion on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Although the contest was tied at 7-7 late in the first half, W&M (1-1) closed the opening stanza with a 3-0 run and then pulled away down the stretch by scoring seven of the contest's final nine goals.
 
Tribe Standouts
In addition to scoring eight goals, coming on just 12 shots, Martire equaled a single-game school record with 10 points (two assists) and posted three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
 
Sabrina Schrader also came up big offensively with a career-high four goals to go with three draw controls, while Sophie Kopec tallied a hat trick on just four shots.
 
Anne Milwicz was outstanding on the draw circle and equaled a career high with six DC, while Courtney Vasquenza led the effort defensively with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
 
Goalie Elsa Rall was excellent protecting the cage and posted 12 saves and a .545 save percentage.
 
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot the Monarchs, 37-28, and posted a .514 shooting percentage.

The Tribe owned a 19-13 advantage in draw controls, while both teams totaled 20 ground balls apiece.

The Opposition
Lilly Siskind led ODU (0-2) with five points (4g, 1a) while Maddie Mullenbach (2g, 2a) and Claire Porter (3g) also contributed offensively for the Monarchs.
 
Caroline Shaefer registered a team-high five draw controls.

Notes
W&M improves to 38-12 all-time versus ODU and has won 11 of the last 14 meetings … The Tribe improves to 39-17 all-time against teams currently in the American Athletic Conference … Martire moved into 30th on W&M's career goals list (81) … Martire's 10-point effort equals the single-game school record set by Tara Hannaford in 2000 … Six of Martire's goals came during the first half … With her 12 saves, Rall became just the fifth goalie in school history to total more than 400 career saves (404).
