RICHMOND, Va. – Mollie Schuma,
Lauren Curran and
Sally Snead each scored a goal, but Richmond tallied a pair of fourth-quarter goals to down William & Mary field hockey, 4-3, on Friday night.
After a scoreless first quarter, W&M (2-7) broke through first less than two minutes into the second stanza. Sophomore
Jayden Moon drove to the end line on the right side and found classmate
Mollie Schuma seven yards from the cage. Schuma scored inside the near post for her second goal of the season.
The Spiders (4-8) answered just 1:10 later off a penalty corner. Steffie Bongers scored on a shot from the top of the circle to the left-side boards.
Lindsey Frank put the home team on top in the 40th minute with a great individual effort. She forced a turnover in the midfield, dribbled into the circle and ripped a shot into the left-side boards to give UR a 2-1 lead.
Like Richmond in the opening half, the Tribe answered quickly. Curran scored just 43 seconds later, turning inside the circle and finishing with a hard shot into the left boards. It marked the fourth-straight game in which Curran has scored a goal.
The Spiders scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the final period to take a 4-2 lead. Madi Hyatt collected a deflection and scored into the right boards in the 50th minute. Four minutes later Olivia Frazier tipped in a penalty corner to extend the lead to two.
Snead scored her second goal of the season with 3:38 remaining to draw the Tribe within one. Senior
Cara Menges found Snead along the left end line in the area. Snead cut back center, drawing out Richmond's GK before scoring into the left boards.
The Tribe had a play advantage over the final 1:10 of the contest after a Richmond yellow card, but could not find the equalizer.
