For nearly 98 minutes, William & Mary had played UNCW to a draw. At worst, the Tribe seemed headed for one point in the Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer standings.
Until the Seahawks' Sophie Trepohl spoiled it with a SportsCenter-worthy moment. Her goal off a corner kick gave UNCW a 1-0 win in overtime Thursday night at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field.
"She basically bicycle-kicked it and hit it perfectly," W&M coach
Julie Shackford said. "I don't know if she could do that again if she had a thousand tries."
As outstanding as Tribe goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty was all night with four saves, two at pointblank range in overtime, she had no chance to stop this one. Few keepers, if any, would have.
The game-winner came on Wilmington's 10th shot, its fifth on goal. The corner kick was the Seahawks' sixth.
The Tribe also had 10 shots, two of which were on goal. W&M (3-7, 1-2 CAA) had two corner kick opportunities, both in the overtime.
"It was a typical, well-fought CAA battle," Shackford said. "They're all derbies no matter what the records are and who's coming in with what. It was a great battle all the way through.
"It's just a matter of keeping our heads up and staying focused. We've got a lot of really young kids on the field. I'm very proud of their effort tonight. I thought it was a great bounce-back from not a very good performance against Towson."
The Tribe's 3-0 loss to the Tigers on Sunday was a tie game until the 78th minute. Two more goals followed in the next nine minutes.
Thursday night, William & Mary got an outstanding performance from Doughty, a junior who hadn't played since Aug. 29.
"We knew they played a lot of long balls over the top and a lot of stuff in the air," Shackford said. "Obviously with her height (5-foot-11) and physicality, we thought that she would be the one for tonight."
Doughty had her two biggest saves in the overtime. On the first, Wilmington's Audrey Harding had a breakaway chance from about 12 yards and to the right of the goal. Doughty stopped it for her third save.
Less than a minute later, the Seahawks' Kayla Burroughs had an even better look from straightaway and just inside the box. Doughty dove to her right and deflected the shot out of bounds, which set up the corner kick that resulted in Trepohl's goal.
"She did really well, especially not having played all season," Shackford said of Doughty. "I'm super proud of her."
Of the Tribe's seven losses this season, six have been by shutout. Since getting two goals in a season-opening win over American, W&M has scored three times in nine games.
"We're trying to figure out who's going to get us goals," Shackford said. "I don't think we have a pure finisher, so we're trying to figure out combinations that work and getting people a little more confident around the net. It's the hardest part of the game."
The Tribe's next game is Sunday at home against Drexel.
