Women's Soccer Falls at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – William & Mary women's soccer suffered a 3-0 setback at Towson on Sunday afternoon. Despite W&M outshooting the home team, 13-10, including a 7-5 advantage in chances on goal, the Tigers (6-3-2, 1-1) scored three times in the game's final 13 minutes to pick up the win.

The Tribe (3-6, 1-1 CAA) had a pair of great chances to score in the 12th minute just 32 seconds apart. On the first opportunity, sophomore Elaina Longjohn broke free into the right side of the box, but her low shot from an angle was stopped Towson's Riley Melendez on a dive to her right.

Melendez, who finished with seven saves in recording the shutout, came up big for a second time. A through ball led Kayleigh Shackford free into the right side of the penalty. The Tribe midfielder's shot to the upper 90 was blocked down by the Tigers goalkeeper to keep the match scoreless.

Towson broke through in the 78th minute to end the stalemate. Jasmine Hamid led Nai Christopher into the penalty area, and with a defender on her back, the CAA's leading scorer chipped it up and over the Tribe's Grace Lemley who was rushing off her line.

With the Tribe pushing for the equalizer, Towson added a second goal just 2:38 later on the counterattack. Jenna Blank played a square ball in the penalty area to Christopher who finished just under Lemley from 10 yards out.

Longjohn, who finished with a game-high six shots, including four on goal, nearly got on the Tribe on the board in 87th minute. Her looping volley from 18 yards out was awkwardly blocked by Melendez.

The Tribe pressure though resulted in a Towson counterattack the other way. Hamid picked up her second assist of the contest serving a ball to the back post from the right wing where Khori Banks was able to knock it home for the final margin.
