NEWARK, Del. – Freshman
Riley Friesen scored her first collegiate goal and the defense continued its standout play as William & Mary women's soccer kept its hopes alive for a Colonial Athletic Association bid thanks to a 1-0 road win at Delaware on Thursday night.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes in which the Tribe (4-8-3, 2-3-3 CAA) put five of its six shots on goal, the Green and Gold finally broke through off a corner kick. Just over seven and a half minutes into the second frame, the Tribe earned its second of two-straight corner kicks. Off the service, junior
Jillian O'Toole sent a shot off the crossbar. Friesen jumped on the rebound and slotted it home for the game's only goal.
Along with being Friesen's first career goal, O'Toole picked up her first collegiate point with the assist. Her shot of the crossbar was one of her team-leading three on the night.
Delaware (5-10-2, 2-4-2 CAA) thought it had found the equalizer in the 70th minute, but the ball was ruled to not cross the line. Off a long service, Delaware's Olivia Schuck sent a shot toward the center of the frame. W&M goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty got a piece of the shot and then jumped on the rebound before it spilled over the goal line for one of her four saves on the night.
With the win, the Green and Gold keeps its chances for the fourth and final CAA Tournament bid alive. W&M, which sits in seventh in the league standing with nine points, hosts Northeastern, who is currently in the No. 4 position with 12 points, on Sunday. With a victory over the Huskies and a little help, the Tribe could secure a spot in the CAA Tournament, which is set for Nov. 4-7 in Elon, N.C.

Quotable
"It was another typical CAA battle and hard fought win for us. We created quite a few tremendous chances with two or three coming in the first few minutes of the game, but we failed to capitalize. The Tribe stayed strong and defended well. In the second half, we came out strong and created a number of good chances. The goal started with a corner, we hit the crossbar and then
Riley Friesen was able to finish after a melee. It was a really good performance and win on the road. Our strong defense carried us through the match."
