WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's soccer closed out the 2021 season suffering a 1-0 setback to Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Tribe (4-9-3, 2-4-3 CAA) turned up the pressure in search of the equalizer. W&M generated four corner kicks and six shots in the final 45 minutes but ultimately could not find the mark.
Senior
Page Frantz had a pair of quality chances in the 63rd and 72nd minutes. The initial opportunity was a great individual effort as she cut back inside the left side of the penalty area, beating a defender, but her shot to the near post was wide. For the latter chance, Frantz won a header off a corner kick but sent it right at Northeastern goalkeeper Angeline Friel.
In the 79th minute off a failed clearance from a corner, sophomore
Bridget Fitzpatrick hit a shot just wide of the left post from just inside the top of the 18-yard box.
The Green and Gold's final quality scoring chance came on a set-up from Fitzpatrick in the 84th minute. She played the ball into the right side of the 18-yard box to senior
Addie Puskar. Her shot off of a turn went just wide of the far post.
Northeastern (8-8-1, 5-4 CAA) scored the game's only goal in the 36th minute. Nina Dooley lifted a shot off the underside of the crossbar from 18 yards out to get the visitor on the board. Prior to the play, the linesman put the flag up for offsides on the initial NU pass but pulled it down before Dooley corralled the deflected pass and dribbled to the top of the box.
The Tribe just missed finding the equalizer two minutes later. Senior
Renee Kohler hit a shot from the left side of the 18 that rang off the crossbar. Freshman Emma D'Alessandra collected the rebound, but her shot went off the side netting.
In the 66th minute, junior goalkeeper
Zoe Doughty came up with a massive 1v1 stop to keep the deficit at one. Northeastern caught W&M on the counterattack. Dooley did well to keep the ball in along the right sidelines and gave the Huskies a 2-on-1 advantage. She centered a pass to Alexi Legowski along the top of the box. Doughty came off her line and blocked away Legowski's chance for her lone save of the day.
For the game, W&M outshot NU, 10-6, and produced seven corner kicks compared to four for the Huskies. Sophomore
Elaina Longjohn led the Tribe with three shots, including two on goal, while Frantz had two.
