WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior
Alexander Levengood converted a late penalty kick and William & Mary men's soccer returned to the win column, topping Colonial Athletic Association foe Charleston, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Martin Family Stadium.
After nearly 84 minutes of scoreless action, the Tribe (3-4, 1-2 CAA) broke through thanks to the penalty spot. For the second time this season, junior
Diba Nwegbo drew the PK and his classmate Levengood finished it off.
On the play, junior
Alfredo Bozalongo played a long ball into the top right side of the penalty area. As Nwegbo ran onto it, Charleston's Daniel Pereira attempted a high kick to clear the chance away on a bounce, but instead clipped the head of Nwegbo, resulting in the PK.
Levengood stepped to the spot and converted for the second time this season. It was his third goal of the year and second game-winner.
For the game, the Tribe outshot Charleston (3-5-2, 0-4 CAA), 14-8, and placed four chances on frame compared to just one for the Cougars.
Junior goalkeeper
Connor Andrews needed just one save to record the shutout, but it was a huge stop in the second half to keep the game scoreless. Charleston's Jakob Kristensen got space in the left side of the penalty area after a run through midfield by Kane Ritchie and beat a defender to the top of the six. Andrews came off his line and made a sprawling save as Kristensen tried to beat him to the lower right in the 67th minute.
