NEWARK, Del. – William & Mary field hockey dropped a Colonial Athletic Association match on the road at No. 20-ranked Delaware, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Hens (8-7, 4-1 CAA) scored twice over the game's opening six minutes on the way to securing their place in the CAA Tournament.
Sophomore
Mollie Schuma scored the Tribe's lone goal of the game, her third of the season, in the third period. Defensively, senior
Kimi Jones turned in a second-straight nine-save performance in goal, and junior
Amber Bode picked up her first career defensive save.
The Blue Hens scored twice over a 2:05 stretch early in the first period to take control of the match. Morgan Rigual scored the game's first goal in the fourth minute, before Julia Duffhuis added the second off a penalty corner at the 5:48 mark.
After a scoreless second period, UD pushed its lead to three with a goal just 2:33 into the third. Femke Strien set up Morgan Bradford in the 38th minute to increase the Blue Hens lead. Strien assisted on all three Delaware goals in the contest.
W&M (3-9, 3-2 CAA) answered just 1:15 later, cashing in the third of three-straight penalty corners. On the play, senior
Cara Menges set up Schuma to draw the Tribe within 3-1 with nearly 22 minutes remaining. It was Menges team-leading third assist of the season and 13th of her career.
