Field Hockey Shuts Out Drexel to Secure CAA Tournament Bid

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Juniors Lauren Curran and Sally Snead scored goals and senior goalkeeper Kimi Jones led a stout defensive performance as William & Mary field hockey cemented its place in the CAA Tournament thanks to a 2-0 win at Drexel on Friday night.

Jones turned in a season-high nine saves in cage for the Tribe (3-8, 3-1 CAA) and picked up her fourth career shutout.

W&M dominated the opening 15 minutes and took an early 1-0 lead, scoring midway through the first period. The Tribe used  a Drexel (5-10, 2-2 CAA) turnover to its advantage as sophomore Mollie Schuma intercepted a Drexel pass along the right side of midfield. She quickly sent a forwarding pass into the penalty area to Curran, who swept it into the right side boards for her sixth goal of the season.

Leading by the 1-0 margin at the break, Snead doubled the Tribe cushion just three minutes into the second half. W&M generated pressuring along the right side of the area. Curran's cross from the right wing was kicked out by Drexel goalkeeper Megan Hadfield. It went right to Snead who scored into the left side boards to extend W&M lead to 2-0.

From there, the defense made the margin stand up. The Dragons attempted 10 shots, including seven on goal, over the final 25 minutes. Jones protected the cage in tallying nine saves, while senior Cara Menges also added a defensive save off a Drexel penalty corner.

With the win, W&M secures a spot in the CAA Tournament for the sixth-straight season. The Tribe enters Sunday's match at No. 20 Delaware tied for second in the league at 3-1.
