BLACKSBURG, Va. – Squaring off against a nationally ranked opponent for the second consecutive game, the William & Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 18/22 Virginia Tech, 23-3, on Wednesday afternoon.
After the Hokies (7-1) opened the game with a 5-0 run,
Belle Martire got W&M (1-5) on the scoreboard with 20:18 showing.
Following a pair of VT goals,
Meredith Hughes found the back of the cage at the 12:29 mark, but the Hokies closed the opening stanza with a 7-0 run to lead 14-2 at halftime.
Sophie Kopec provided the Tribe's lone goal of the second half.
Tribe Standouts
Elsa Rall recorded 13 saves in 40:17 of action, as she posted 12 of her stops during the first half.
Martire led the Tribe offensively with two points (1g, 1a), while Kopec added a goal, two caused turnovers and a ground ball.
Anne Milwicz totaled a team-high three draw controls.
Inside the Numbers
VT outshot W&M, 44-10, as all 10 of the Tribe's shots were on goal.
The Hokies also owned advantages in draw controls (19-8), and ground balls (21-12).
The Opposition
Paige Petty led VT with seven goals and a game-high 10 draw controls, while Taylor Caskey (4g, 2a) and Kayla Frank (3g, 3a) added six points apiece.
Notes
Rall's 13 saves equaled her second-highest total this season and marked the fourth time in six games she has posted a double-digit save total … Martire extended her scoring streak and has recorded at least one goal in every game of her career … Despite the loss, W&M controls the all-time series against Virginia Tech, 6-5.
