WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Belle Martire and freshman
Sarah Cipolla etched their names in the William & Mary lacrosse team's record book with a pair of outstanding performances to help lift the Tribe to a 19-17 victory against George Washington at Martin Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Martire set a single-game school record with nine goals, coming on just 11 shots, while Cipolla eclipsed the program's single-game record for draw controls with 11.
Martire's record-breaking goal came at a pivotal moment during the contest, as it gave the Tribe a two-goal lead with 1:09 remaining and halted a 4-0 run by the Colonials (0-7).
W&M (2-5) raced out to 4-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest and led by as many as five in the opening half.
Although the Tribe still led by five following a goal by
Caroline Donovan with 13:27 left in the second half, GW narrowed the margin go just one with 4:23 remaining. However, goalie
Elsa Rall stopped Kendall Lambert's game-tying attempt with 1:56 remaining and Martire scored on the ensuing possession to help preserve the victory.
Tribe Standouts
In addition to her school record nine goals on an .818 shooting percentage, Martire tallied four draw controls. The outstanding performance bettered the previous school record of eight goals set by Grace Golden (2011) and Jaime Sellers (2008), while her nine points ranks tied for second in W&M's record book
Cipolla's school-record 11 draw controls was one more than the standard set by teammate
Meredith Hughes (10) in 2017. The Glenwood, Md., native also posted two assists and two caused turnovers.
Sophomore
Starr Howard registered her best performance of the season and totaled a career-high six caused turnovers to go with six draw controls and three ground balls.
Nikky Price totaled a career-high three goals, while
Sydney Sloan (2g, 1a) and
Grace Ahonen both found the back of the net twice.
Inside the Numbers
W&M outshot GW, 40-33, and owned a commanding advantage in draw controls, 24-10.
The Colonials owned a narrow edge in ground balls (26-24), while both teams committed 21 turnovers.
The Opposition
Katie Quinn and Christine Webber led GW with five goals apiece, while Caroline Esmond totaled a team-high five draw controls.
Notes
W&M's 19 goals were a season high and marked the most by the program since defeating Liberty, 19-2, in 2017 … The Tribe's 24 draw controls were its most since posting 24 in the win at Longwood in 2015 … W&M's 15 caused turnovers were a season high … Martire extended her scoring streak and has recorded at least one goal in every game of her career …W&M improved to 3-2 all-time against GW and to 75-25-1 all-time against teams currently in the Atlantic 10.
