Women's Basketball's Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. – Northeastern's Stella Clark used a personal 5-0 run late in the fourth quarter to propel her Huskies to a 61-55 victory over the William & Mary women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in Boston.

With the game tied at 50-50, Clark hit a high-arching 3-pointer from the right corner to put the Huskies ahead for good, before adding a driving reverse lay-up to make it 55-50 with 1:07 left in regulation. The Tribe drew back within two on a redshirt sophomore Sydney Wagner 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, but the Huskies went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the game's final 30 seconds to hang on for the win.

Down by seven to open the final period, William & Mary used an 11-4 run to tie the score at 47-47 with 5:07 remaining in the game. Sophomore Eva Hodgson had all 11 points as she scored the first five points of the quarter to cut the lead to 43-41. The Huskies answered with back-to-back baskets, but Hodgson responded with two triples to level the score at 47 apiece.

Northeastern took advantage of some Tribe foul trouble in the third quarter and closed the period on 10-1 run to build its seven-point lead. Katie May rimmed in a 3-pointer to give the Huskies its first lead before Century McCartney hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to three. The Tribe answered with a free throw, but Alexis Hill had a lay-up and McCartney completed a traditional 3-point play to increase the Huskie lead to 43-36 at the end of the frame.

After Northeastern cut the W&M lead to two early in the second quarter the Tribe responded with a 10-2 run to build its largest lead of the game. Hodgson canned a three to start the spurt before she found a cutting junior Nyla Pollard for a lay-up. The Huskies answered with a lay-up, but then redshirt Wagner scored five straight to push the W&M lead to 26-16 with 4:18 left to go in the first half.

With 12 points in the final quarter, sophomore Eva Hodgson led the Tribe with 19 points in the contest. She finished 7-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-5 from deep while adding five assists. Redshirt sophomore Sydney Wagner was the only other W&M player in double-figures as she had 13 points and a rebound. Senior Victoria Reynolds added a season-high 13 rebounds, while junior Bailey Eichner had 7 boards.

Stella Clark scored a game-high 22 points to lead two Huskies in double-figures. Clark added three rebounds and two assists. Alexis Hill added a double-double as she finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Shannon Todd scored nine points for the Huskies, while Century McCartney had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Inside the Numbers
- The Tribe shot just 39.2-percent (20-of-51) from the field in the contest.
- Northeastern took advantage of his foul shot advantage as it hit 20-of-23 (87%) from the line, while W&M only went to the stripe 12 times and was just 7-of-12.
- W&M controlled the battle of the glass, 35-33, but suffered its first setback of the year when winning that category.

Notes
Sophomore Eva Hodgson was in double-figures for the 18th straight game, which ties the Division I school record for a double-figure streak … It was the 34th time in her career she's been in double-figures … Hodgson's 4-of-5 from behind the arc is good for a tie for seventh in single-game history … Redshirt sophomore Sydney Wagner had her sixth double-figure game of the season and the 12th of her career … Senior Victoria Reynolds' 13 rebounds were a season-high and give her three 10-plus rebound games this season and 10 for her Tribe career.

W&M opens a weekend CAA homestand next Friday, Jan. 24 when they take on Delaware. The Tribe will then host Drexel on Sunday, Jan. 26. Tip times are slated for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
