The William & Mary field hockey team battled hard throughout the game on Sunday at No. 1-ranked North Carolina, but was unable to keep pace with the nation's top offense, falling 8-0. The Tribe moves to 1-4 in the early part of the season, while the defending NCAA Champions improved to 5-0 on the year.
How it Happened
- UNC came out attacking, taking two shots in the first two minutes that were kicked away by sophomore goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.). The Tar Heels earned a penalty corner at the start of the third minute, scoring on their second attempt for the 1-0 lead.
- North Carolina went up 2-0 just a few minutes later, with two long breakaway passes to get behind the defense. Jones was able to get a partial stop on the final shot, but the ball trickled through the pads and in for the second goal.
- Out of the restart, the Tribe began getting up the field much more strongly, getting into the attacking circle several times, but could not get on the end of a shot. On defense, W&M also locked down tighter, frustrating several Tar Heel attacks.
- In the 13th minute, W&M began finding the range, building up to an attack for two good looks at goal. Freshman
Sally Snead (Midlothian, Va.) took the first shot from the high elbow that was kicked back out by UNC goalkeeper Amanda Henry, and senior
Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) swiped at the rebound, but her attempt slide just wide of the post.
- The Tar Heels tacked on a third goal in the waning moments of the quarter, scoring on the fourth attempt after Jones stuffed the first three point-blank attempts to raise her total to seven saves in the first period.
- The second quarter saw W&M continuing to grow in strength on the attack, adding another shot on-goal late from
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.). On defense, the Tribe locked down as well, only allowing one goal and frustrating a pair of penalty corners.
- The Tribe kept up the pressure in the third quarter, with three shots and a penalty corner early, before the Tar Heels broke the game open with three goals for a 7-0 lead heading to the fourth.
- In the fourth quarter, W&M still battled gamely, fighting all the way to the end despite UNC adding another goal in the 49th minute.
- In the 50th minute, the Hooper stole the ball at midfield and carried it down into the circle, where she was knocked to the ground and awarded a penalty corner. Off the corner,
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) had her first shot blocked but gathered the rebound and launched it into the goal. Upon official review, however, the score was waved off due to being too high and in a dangerous position.
