The William & Mary field hockey team got back in the win column on Sunday, hitting the road to take down Monmouth, 3-1. The Tribe improved to 2-4 overall, while the Hawks fell to 5-3 on the year.
How It Happened
- Even though Monmouth had the first shot of the game, it was W&M that came through with the most chances and first goal.
- At the end of the fifth minute, the Tribe earned a penalty corner, and converted for their first set-piece goal of the season. Captains senior
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) earned assists, as junior
Haley Hopkins (Springfield, Va.) knocked home her first career goal.
- W&M also had four more corners in the space of 30 seconds late in the first period, but could not add to the lead just yet.
- Monmouth came out stronger in the second quarter, taking four shots to W&M's two and taking two penalty corners. However, the Tribe defense was more than up to the task, including two saves from sophomore goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.).
- W&M once again took firm control in the third quarter, with four shots and three penalty corners in the first six minutes, and broke through again at the end of the 38th minute. Junior
Ashley Drum (Virginia Beach, Va.) was impeded while attacking, drawing a penalty stroke. Senior captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) stepped to the dot, and converted for the third time in three tries this season.
- Monmouth began pushing again to try and get on the scoreboard over the final five minutes of the quarter, with three shots and two penalty corners, but the only shot on-goal was cleared off the line by senior
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) for her conference-leading second defensive save of the season.
- The Hawks finally broke through in the fourth quarter, in the 51st minute, after Jones made a save on the first shot attempt but the rebound fell to a Monmouth stick to cut the Tribe lead to 2-1.
- W&M put the game out of reach with two minutes to go. Out of a restart above the 23-meter line, van de Kamp smacked a ball quickly towards the near post, and senior
Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) one-timed it to the far side of the goal for her second goal of the season.
