W&M Falls in Shootout at VCU

The William & Mary field hockey went the full distance Friday afternoon at VCU, battling through regulation and two scoreless overtime periods before falling in the shootout for a final score of 1-0.  The Tribe moves to 1-3 on the year, while the Rams evened their record at 2-2 overall.

How it Happened
- VCU opened the game on their home field taking three shots in the first five minutes, but senior goalkeeper Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.) was more than equal to the task presented, making saves on each of the shots that posed any threat.  While play continued to flow for the rest of the quarter, neither team was able to muster another shot.
- The Tribe stepped up the offensive pressure in the second quarter, earning four penalty corners and taking four shots, but could not break through on any to go into the half knotted at 0-0.
- The Rams took five shots in the second half against sophomore Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.), but could not break through her solid defense as Jones registered three saves in the final 30 minutes of regulation.  The story was much the same on the other end of the field, as the Tribe could not find the final touch through the defense to attack the goal.
- Heading to overtime for the first time this season, W&M proved that it remembered its lessons from last year well, dominating possession and the offensive end while allowing VCU to take no shots in the 7v7 set.
- In the first overtime, the Tribe drew two corners and took four shots, three of them on-goal, but was stymied by a strong effort from Rams goalkeeper Sasha Elliott.  The second overtime saw three more shots, but again, no goals, and the teams were off to a penalty shootout for the first time since 1993 in the series.
- Both teams hit on the first two rounds of the shootout, with seniors Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) and Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) scoring for the Tribe.  The third round saw misses for both W&M and VCU, but the Rams would go on to score in both the fourth and the fifth, while the Tribe missed on its fourth attempt, setting the final tally in the shootout at 4-2 in favor of the Rams.
