The William & Mary field hockey team fell to longtime-rival Old Dominion on the road on Tuesday night, 3-1, despite a strong second-half effort. The Tribe moves to 1-2 on the year, while the Lady Monarchs improved to 2-1 overall.
How it Happened
- ODU opened the game in a rush, out-shooting W&M 5-0 in the first quarter. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) made two of her three saves in the first 11 minutes, before the Lady Monarchs broke through off a broken corner at the start of the 12th minute.
- The second period was much quieter, with play flowing between the two circles and only one shot registered by either team, which again was saved by Jones.
- W&M began breaking through after halftime, earning its first penalty corner in the 38th minute, but the shot was deflected wide.
- Just over a minute later, ODU pulled a corner of its own, and scored to make the score 2-0.
- The Tribe commanded play over the final 20 minutes, beginning with three shots in the final four minutes of the third quarter. Two of them, from sophomore
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) and freshman
Tabby Billingham (Dallinghoo, Suffolk, England) were on-target but the ODU goalkeeper was able to make two diving saves.
- The fourth quarter began with two more penalty corners from the Lady Monarchs early, but senior
Morgan Connor (Bedford, N.Y.), who had subbed in for Jones late in the third, stood tall and saved both attempts. The Tribe then took the next five shots and two penalty corners, not letting the ball out of the offensive third, but still couldn't find its way through the defensive to score.
- Old Dominion tacked on a third goal on another corner in the 54th minute, taking advantage of a player advantage after a W&M green card, but on the restart the Tribe drove down and managed to earn a penalty stroke attempt after being impeded in the circle. Senior captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) stepped to the spot and drilled her attempt in the back of the net, cutting the score to 3-1.
- The Lady Monarchs made one final attempt to inflate their total in the 56th minute, earning back-to-back penalty corners, but Connor again was strong with stops on both initial shots, and Menges batted a third attempt out of mid-air for a defensive save and to preserve the final margin.
