W&M Baseball Falls to Elon in CAA Semifinals

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team's season came to an end in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals, falling to league regular-season champion Elon, 9-2, on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field the Veterans Memorial Park.

Elon (32-23) scored three runs in the opening inning and road the strong pitching outing of Kyle Brnovich to the CAA Championship game. The junior right-hander threw eight innings allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out seven.

The Phoenix struck first thanks to the bat of Ty Adock, who finished with four RBIs. After working the count full, the Elon freshman lifted a three-run home run to right field to give the Phoenix a 3-0 lead in the early going.

W&M (33-22) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third thanks to a Hunter Smith RBI single to right field, but Elon scored at least a run in five of the final six innings to pull out the victory. The Phoenix meet UNCW, who downed the Tribe, 5-1, in the winner's bracket final on Friday, in the CAA Championship game later on Saturday.

Junior Brandon Raquet, who scored in the Tribe's first run in the third, homered for the fifth time in the last 11 games in the eighth inning, but Elon's offense was too much. The Phoenix collected six extra-base hits among its 11 on the afternoon.

The Tribe finished the 2019 season with 33 wins, marking the 11th time in program history that W&M posted 30 wins. In fact, it marks the fifth time in the last seven seasons that the Green and Gold surpassed the 30-win mark. The Tribe won a pair of CAA Tournament games for the fourth time in the last seven years.

How It Happened
- Elon scored three in the opening frame thanks to one big swing from Adcock. Anthony Galason walked to lead off the game and moved over to third on Cam Devanney's double to left field. Facing a full court, Adock homered to left field to give the Phoenix a 3-0 lead.
- The Tribe pulled on back in the third thanks to a Hunter Smith single. Raquet worked the count to reach on a walk and hustled to second to beat the throw on an infield grounder from senior Zach Pearson. Smith blooped a single into right field to bring home Raquet and cut the deficit to 3-1 but was thrown out taking too big of a turn around the first-base bag.
- The Phoenix tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth. Matt Oldham led off the frame with a single up the middle. After Butts struck out Nick Cicci for his fourth K of the contest, the Tribe turned to the bullpen and sophomore Randy Prosperi. The right-hander induced a grounder to short but the throw to second was high and allowed Oldham to move up to third and Adam Spurlin to second. Tyler Stanley drove both home with a double to left-center field to increase Elon's lead to 5-1. Stanley finished with three RBIs for Elon.
- Elon added another in the fifth on an Oldham RBI single. The first two batters of the inning reached as Joe Satterfield walked and Devanney singled to left field. After a fielder's choice, Oldham singled to right field to drove in Satterfield and push the Phoenix lead to 6-1. On the play, senior Owen Socher cut down Adock with a strike from right field to third baseman Zach Pearson.
- The Phoenix added single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. In the seventh, Satterfield doubled to left-center field with one out and came around to score on an Adcock single up the middle. Spurlin doubled to lead off the eighth and scored on Stanley's single to right-center field. Oldham delivered an RBI triple to right center in the ninth to drive home the Phoenix's ninth run.
- Raquet blasted his second home run of the CAA Championship in the bottom of the eighth inning. He hammered a 3-2 Brnovich pitch over the center field wall for his eighth long ball of the season to draw W&M within 8-2.
