Strong Pitching Leads Baseball Past George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – A trio of William & Mary pitchers combined on a two-hitter as Tribe baseball posted a 5-1 road win over former Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.

Starter Nick Butts and sophomore relievers Justin Pearson and Randy Prosperi combined to stifle the Patriots' (15-24) offense. Butts threw 3.1 innings of no-hit baseball and struck out three before giving way to Pearson who finished with a career-high 4.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts while allowing just one run. Prosperi put the finishing touches on the Tribe's second-straight mid-week win, striking out two batters in 1.1 innings.

Offensively, the Tribe (23-17) scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings before adding two important insurance runs in the seventh. W&M received contributions up and down the line as senior Owen Socher reached base three times and scored two of the Tribe's five runs.

Senior Jason Waldman and juniors Brandon Raquet and Matthew Trehub each collected multi-hit games. Seniors Zach Pearson and Kyle Wright contributed RBI sac flies, while Trehub and Waldman added back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh.

How It Happened
- Socher led off the game with a single to left field and moved up 90-feet on a wild pitch. He came around to score, sliding around a tag at the plate, on a Zach Pearson ground ball to short that was mishandled Mason's Alejandro Aponte.
- In the second, W&M tacked on another run thanks to a sacrifice fly from Wrighte. Waldman doubled to left field to lead off the inning followed by a Raquet single that set up runners at the corners and no one out. Wrighte brought home Waldman lifting a fly ball to center field to increase the Tribe lead to 2-0.
- Mason threatened in the fourth inning but Butts and Pearson got W&M out the jam. The first two batters reached on a hit by pitch and four-pitch walk and each moved up 90-feet on a wild pitch. Butts struck out Bailey Klein, before W&M turned to the bullpen. Justin Pearson struck out Greg Popatak II and got Ryan Tassone to lineout to third to end the frame.
- The Tribe pushed across another run in the top of the fifth. Socher led off the inning with a walk and moved up to second on a ground out. After a Hunter Smith single advanced Socher to third, Zach Pearson drove home the Tribe's third run of the contest with a sacrifice fly to center field.
- George Mason picked up its only two hits and lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Aaron Yurko led off the inning with an infield single to third base before moving up to second on a groundout. Aponte blooped a single inside the right-field line to bring Yurko around to score and cut the margin to 3-1. Justin Pearson rebounded to induce an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
- W&M added two more runs in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Trehub and Waldman. Freshman Jack Cone reached on a walk to start the inning and stole second. After Smith reached on an error by the Mason shortstop, Trehub and Waldman provided back-to-back singles to bring both Cone and Smith around to score and increase W&M's lead to 5-1.
- Justin Pearson and Prosperi allowed just one Mason baserunner over the final four innings.
