Baseball Edged by Old Dominion, 4-2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team was unable to complete a comeback attempt in a 4-2 verdict against in-state rival Old Dominion on Tuesday evening. The Tribe (15-7) was hindered by a pair of errors in a tight contest with the Monarchs (16-8).

The Monarchs pushed across a run each in the first three innings to claim an early 3-1 advantage. ODU took advantage of a couple of W&M mishap in the third inning to grab a two-run advantage.

ODU tacked on another run via sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make it a 4-1 affair. However, the Tribe made an effort to close the gap in the bottom of the eighth. Senior Owen Socher came off the bench for a leadoff single to right center before rookie Matt Thomas drew a one-out walk. On the next at-bat, freshman Jack Cone laced an RBI single down the right line to slice the margin to 4-2.

Nonetheless, the Tribe went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to cut the rally short. Despite lasting 7.2 innings, sophomore Jacob Haney (2-2) took the loss after yielding five hits and four runs (two unearned). Morgan Maguire (1-2) tossed six strong innings with five strikeouts to gain the win. Connor Muly logged 1.2 shutout inning for a save.

Tribe Standouts
Thomas finished as the only player in the game with multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Cone and senior Hunter Smith both belted RBI singles. Junior Matthew Trehub blasted the second double of the evening. Sophomore Justin Pearson hurled 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout.
