WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary baseball team dropped a tough 7-6 decision to Northeastern in its Colonial Athletic Association opener on Friday night. The Huskies (11-10, 1-0 CAA) scored three runs in the ninth inning to rally late against the Tribe (14-5, 0-1 CAA).
With the score deadlocked at 3-all, the tie was snapped with runs exchanged by both teams in the sixth inning. The Huskies took the lead after manufacturing a run in the top half, but it didn't last long.
In the home half, sophomore
Matt McDermott drew a leadoff walk, before senior
Kyle Wrighte moved him up behind a fielder's choice. Junior
Matthew Trehub then smoked a two-RBI triple off the right-center wall to give W&M a 5-4 edge.
However, the Huskies engineered a three-run frame in the top of the ninth. With runners on the corner. Ian Fair delivered the game-winning runs via three-RBI inside the park home run. Nonetheless, the Tribe made a strong comeback attempt in the bottom half of the final frame.
Freshman
Jack Cone led off the inning with a walk before moving into scoring position on a passed ball. Senior
Zach Pearson then platted Cone behind a two-out single to right center for the 7-6 margin. However, the potential walk-off run was struck out to cut the comeback short.
Junior
Chris Farrell (1-1) was dealt the loss after yielding three runs on two hits. Sam Jacobsak (1-2) earned the win as he pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Andrew Misiaszek preserved the win the ninth inning for his seventh save.
Tribe Standouts
Pearson paced the Tribe with a 3-for-5 performance that included a triple and two RBI. Trehub finished 2-for-4 with the second triple of the night and two RBI. Senior
Hunter Smith totaled two hits, a double and RBI. Rookie
Hunter Hart contributed an RBI single in the first inning and walked twice.
