Men's Swimming Breaks Three School Records at Florida Last Chance

The William & Mary men's swimming team picked up three school records over the weekend at the Florida Invitational Last Chance meet, including an all-time Colonial Athletic Association mark as well.  The Tribe had two men swimming, and while neither was able to swim a guaranteed invite time to the NCAA Championships, both improved their standings on the national performance list.

- Junior Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.) set a pair of school records on Friday in his first race, the prelims of the 100 fly.  He swam 46.62 in the event, breaking his own school record set last week at the CAA Championships by 0.16 seconds.  Doherty also broke his own record in the 50 fly along the way, making the turn in 21.41 to beat his old record from last week by 0.18 seconds.  Doherty went on to swim 47.08 in the finals of the 100 fly, the fourth-fastest time in school history.

- On Saturday, Doherty swam three times in two different events.  In the prelims of the 100 free, he swam a lifetime-best 44.13 seconds to move up to second all-time among Tribe athletes.  That was also the eighth-fastest single race ever.  In the finals, he swam 44.87 seconds, and to finish off the weekend, time-trialed a 20.15 in the 50 free.

- Junior Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) started his weekend off with a relatively calm 19.88 in the prelims of the 50 free on Friday, tied for the 10th-fastest time in school history.  Then, in finals that night, he blistered a 19.46 to break his own school and CAA record by 0.11 seconds, and immediately turned around to clock 19.47 in a time-trial, the second-fastest time ever.  On Saturday, Wright swam 43 seconds flat in the morning prelims, the fifth-fastest time ever, and improved that to 42.97 seconds in the finals, tied for the third-fastest time in school history.  In his four non-time-trial races, Wright won three and finished second in the fourth.

Both men will now have to wait and see how the NCAA declarations shake out.  The pre-invite list of all athletes entered and hoping to be selected will be posted on NCAA.com on Monday, March 11, with the final list of qualifiers being posted on Wednesday, March 13.
