WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Feb. 26, 2019)—The William & Mary lacrosse team suffered its first setback of the season with a 16-8 loss to No. 7 Virginia at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field on Tuesday evening.
The Tribe (2-1) trailed by just two goals at halftime, 6-4, but Virginia (5-0) utilized a 7-0 run to begin the second half to build a nine-goal cushion.
Although W&M outscored the Cavaliers during the remainder of the contest, it was unable to get any closer than the final margin.
Tribe Standouts
Freshman
Starr Howard was outstanding on the draw circle once again and totaled a career-high eight draw controls – an impressive figure that ranks tied for fourth in school history and is just two shy of the program's single-game record.
Freshman
Belle Martire led the Tribe with three goals and three caused turnovers to go with two ground balls, while freshman
Grace Ahonen found the back of the cage twice.
Senior
Maddie Torgerson also came up big with five draw controls and a goal, while senior
Anne McElgunn posted three caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Goalie
Elsa Rall totaled 10 saves and five ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
Virginia outshot W&M, 34-23, and held a narrow edge in ground balls, 24-23, while both teams totaled 13 draw controls apiece.
Five of UVA's six goals in the first half came on free position opportunities.
The Opposition
Maggie Jackson led UVA with six points (3g, 3a), while Avery Shoemaker and Ashlyn McGovern and Lillie Kloak all added three goals apiece.
Sammy Mueller also came up big with three points (2g, 1a), four ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover.
Notes
Six of the Tribe's eight goals were scored by freshmen … Howard has totaled 14 draw controls during the last two games and leads the team with 18 this season … The impressive total through just three games is already nearly halfway to breaking into the program's single-season top-10 list (41) … Martire has posted back-to-back hat tricks and leads the team with nine goals this season.
