DURHAM, N.C. (March 2, 2019)—Squaring off against its second consecutive nationally ranked opponent, the William & Mary lacrosse team fell at No. 15 Duke, 19-3, on Friday afternoon.
Duke (4-1) opened the game with 11 unanswered goals before W&M (2-2) finished the half by scoring two of the final three.
However, the Tribe scored just once more in the second half as Duke secured the victory in a matchup that was played in driving rain and cold conditions.
Tribe Standouts
Sophomore
Sophie Kopec led the Tribe with two points (1g, 1a), while freshman
Belle Martire and
Maddie Torgerson both found the back of the cage once.
Freshman
Starr Howard totaled a team-high three draw controls to go with two ground balls, while
Holly Hager posted a team-best three ground balls.
Inside the Numbers
Duke Outshot the Tribe, 31-9, and recorded a 22-13 advantage in ground balls.
Although W&M owned an 8-7 advantage in draw controls during the first half, the Blue Devils finished the contest with a 16-8 margin in their favor.
The Opposition
Charlotte North led Duke with nine points (7g, 2a), while Olivia Jenner added four points (3g, 1a) and six draw controls.
Notes
Howard has totaled at least three draw controls in every game this season and leads the Tribe with 21 … Martire has scored a goal in every contest and leads the team with 10 goals.
