Third-Straight 30-Point Knight Leads Men's Basketball to Overtime Win over Charleston

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Highlighted by a third-consecutive 30-point night from junior Nathan Knight and a 10-2 overtime run, William & Mary rallied past third-place Charleston, 86-84, at Kaplan Arena on Thursday night. The Tribe (11-16, 7-8 CAA) trailed by as many as 15 points in the opening 20 minutes but erased the deficit for its 30th double-digit comeback under head coach Tony Shaver.

Knight became the first player in school history to record three consecutive 30-point games. The junior scored 21 of his game-high 30 in the final 25 minutes, including seven in the overtime period. He added six rebounds, four assists and a career-high eight blocks in the victory. Junior Matt Milon turned in a CAA career-high performance with 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, to go along with six rebounds.

After Jaylen McManus hit a lay-up on the opening possession of overtime for the Cougars (21-8, 10-6 CAA), Knight sandwiched two baskets around a Luke Loewe bucket to put the Tribe up 78-74 with 2:23 remaining. After a CofC basket, Milon buried a right-wing 3-pointer and classmate Justin Pierce hit a free throw to give the Tribe an 82-76 lead it would not relinquish.

Behind a hot-shooting first half, Charleston opened up as much as a 15-point advantage, 42-27, with just over two minutes left on a McManus lay-up. The Tribe closed to within 42-34 at the intermission, scoring the final seven points of the frame, including five from freshman Chase Audige. The Cougars connected at 58.6-percent (17-of-29) clip from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including 6-of-12 from 3-point land.

Pierce and Milon hit back-to-back 3-pointers less than three minutes into the second half to cut the margin to 46-42. W&M finally took the lead with a 12-4 run, including eight from Knight. He scored four straight to give W&M a 63-60 lead with 5:57 remaining.

Charleston answered with seven in a row to retake the lead, but Milon stemmed the tide with a 3-pointer at the 4:16 mark. The teams traded free throws over the final minute as the game headed to overtime. Brevin Galloway knocked down a pair of 37 seconds remaining to briefly put the visitors in front before Milon answered with two just 25 ticks later.

How It Happened
- Trailing 9-6, W&M used a 10-0 run to take its largest lead of the first half. Knight started the rally with a lay-up before Milon restored the Tribe the lead with a triple. Milon continued his personal run with a lay-up and another 3-ball to make it 16-9 with 13:59 left in the first half.
- Charleston answered with 14-3 spurt of its own to build a 23-19 cushion with 9:44 left in the opening period. Sam Miller canned a top-of-the-key 3-pointer before Grant Riller and Jaylen Richard added back-to-back jumpers to tie the score. After a freshman L.J. Owens 3-pointer, Riller, Jarrell Brantley and Richard scored to end the run.
- The Cougars extended their lead to double-digits with 12-1 run midway through the period. Zac Jasper hit a 3-pointer before Owens split a pair from the free throw line. Three-straight buckets from Nick Harris, Riller and Brantley, and a 3-pointer from Galloway pushed the lead to double-figures at 35-22.
- CofC extended its lead to as many as 15 points, but W&M closed the first half on a 7-0 run to cut the halftime deficit to 42-34. Audige sparked the rally with a flush and a top-of-the-key 3-pointer before Knight closed the run with lay-up with 21 seconds left in the stanza.
- After Brantley scored four-straight points to extend CofC's lead to double-digits early in the second half, Pierce and Milon knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to four, 46-42, at the 17:21 mark.
-The Green and Gold used a 13-5 run to regain the lead for the first time since the 12:33 mark of the first half. Knight sparked the run with a lay-up and Loewe sunk a left-corner three. After a traditional 3-point play from Brantley, Knight knocked in two from the line and Loewe hit a lay-up to cut it to one. Again Charleston answered but this time W&M scored four in a row from Knight and Milon to make it 59-58 with 7:39 left.
- Over the final 3:34 of regulation the lead changed once and there were four ties, including at the end of 40 minutes. Milon sunk a pair of free throws with 12.5 seconds left to tie the score at 72, and the Tribe held on for a stop at the end of regulation.
- After McManus hit a lay-up, Knight sandwiched two baskets around a Loewe bucket to put the Tribe up two possessions. After a CofC basket, Milon buried a right-wing 3-pointer and Pierce hit a free throw to give the Tribe an 82-76 lead it would not relinquish.
- Charleston brought the lead within one-point twice, but W&M hit enough from the free throw line, and Riller's 30-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer was just off of the mark to secure the 86-84 triumph.
