Women's Basketball Fights All Night, Falls to Old Dominion Thursday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Victoria Reynolds poured in a season-high 20 points, but was unable to bring the William & Mary women's basketball team all the way back as they fell to Old Dominion 69-58 on Thursday night.
 
Old Dominion (6-1) scored the game's first seven points and then used a 10-0 run midway through the opening quarter to take its largest lead of the first half. Leading 12-8, Taylor Edwards scored seven points on the spurt to go with a 3-pointer from Ajah Wayne to give ODU a 22-8 lead with 1:59 left in the first quarter.
 
Down 28-20, W&M (6-2) used a 7-1 run to cut the Monarchs lead to just two late in the first half. Junior Bailey Eichner spilt a pair of free throws, before redshirt junior Harper Birdsong hit a triple to cut it to 28-24. After an ODU free throw, Birdsong added another a 3-pointer to make it 29-27 with 1:51 left in the half. After the Tribe failed to tie or take the lay-up after another stop, ODU's Aziah Hudson hit a 3-pointer to make the halftime score 32-27.
 
The Tribe again was able to cut it to two midway through the third quarter after the Monarchs re-extended the lead back to seven. Junior Gabby Rogers had the Tribe's first two baskets of the half to make it 34-31. Again ODU answered with a basket, but sophomore Eva Hodgson completed a traditional 3-point play to make it 36-34 with 6:41 to go in the third.
 
However, this time the Monarchs responded with an 11-0 to run to extend its lead back to double-figures. Young sparked the rally with four straight points, before Edwards had a fast-break lay-up and Victoria Morris and Hudson had back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 47-34 with 1:03 left in the third.
 
The Monarchs extended their lead to as many as 17 early in the fourth quarter, but the Tribe never quit. Down by 12, W&M used a quick 5-0 spurt to make it interesting late. Reynolds buried a 3-pointer, before getting a steal and a lay-up to make 62-55 with 1:24 left. ODU hit 7-of-8 from the line to pull away with an 69-58 final.

Individual Leaders
Senior Victoria Reynolds scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Tribe in the game. She added five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block. Sophomore Eva Hodgson was also in double-figures again with 14, while she added five rebounds, one block, and two helpers. Junior Gabby Rogers added eight points and four boards, while redshirt junior Harper Birdsong had six. Classmate Bailey Eichner added three points, but had eight rebounds, three assists, three steals, and four blocks.
 
Ajah Wayne and Mariah Adams each finished with a team-high 13 points for the Monarchs, which put four players in double-figures. Wayne added four rebounds and three assists, while Adams chipped in six boards, five dimes, and four steals. Both Taylor Edwards and Amari Young had 12 points for the Monarchs in the win. Young just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, four blocks, and four steals, while Edwards chipped four boards and a steal.
 
Inside the Numbers
- W&M shot 36.5-percent (23-for-63) from the field in the contest.
- The Tribe was also cold from 3-point range as it shot 5-of-23 (21.7-percent) from distance.
- The Green and Gold forced ODU into 20 miscues in the game.
- W&M had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio as it 18 helpers to just 15 miscues.
- ODU outrebounded the Green and Gold 40-33.
- The Monarchs attempted 23 free throws, compared to just nine for W&M.

Senior Victoria Reynolds scored a season-high 20 points … She has been in double-figures in five of the last six games and now has 44 double-figure performances … It was the Tribe's third 20-point performance this season, and the second of Reynolds' career … Sophomore Eva Hodgson was in double-figures for the eighth time this season, and the ninth straight game … She now has 25 career double-figure outings … She ran her free throw streak to 32 this season and 42 in a row dating back to March 1, 2019 … Junior Bailey Eichner added a career-high tying eight rebounds and three assists, while her four blocks and three steals were a career-bests.

W&M closes the week as it travels to in-state rival and former CAA foe VCU on Sunday, Dec. 8. Tip time between the Tribe and the Rams is set for 1 p.m.
