The No. 23-ranked William & Mary field hockey team closed out the regular season in style on Sunday, defeating Towson 3-1 on the road. The Tribe improved to 12-6 and 5-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Tigers fell to 3-16, 0-6 in league play.
How it Happened
- W&M got on the ball early, and scored in the second minute. Senior captain
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) passed the ball forward to classmate
Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) cutting along the baseline. Hooper drove across the circle, and shot past Towson's goalkeeper from close range for her seventh goal of the year and the 1-0 lead.
- The Tigers responded early in the 8th minute, with Georgia Beachley scoring her eighth of the season on a straight shot to the near post to tie the match 1-1.
- That's how it stayed for the rest of the first half, despite W&M holding an 8-1 advantage in shots and 3-1 edge on penalty corners.
- The Tribe came out strong once more as the second half commenced, and earned a corner in the 36th minute. After seniors captain
Christie van de Kamp (Midlothian, Va.) and
Cassidy Goodwin (Gloucester, Va.) had their shots blocked away, junior
Haley Hopkins (Springfield, Va.) darted in and scored a scoop shot to the near post for her fifth goal of the year, and the 2-1 lead.
- Six minutes later, W&M scored again to set the final margin at 3-1.
Jorja Morgan (Wakerley, Queensland, Australia) dumped the ball into the circle, and sophomore captain
Cara Menges (Richmond, Va.) blasted a shot into the back boards for her career-high fifth goal of the season.
