The No. 23-ranked William & Mary field hockey team saw its season come to an end on Friday night in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals, falling to Northeastern 1-0 in the final minutes. The Tribe finishes another strong campaign at 12-7 overall and No. 23 in both the NFHCA coaches poll and in the RPI.
How it Happened
- Both teams were strong in possession all game long, but chances were few and far between. Senior
Annie Snead (Midlothian, Va.) cracked off the first shot of the game almost five minutes in, but it went wide of the goal.
- Northeastern had the next chances at the start of the 12th minute, after earning a penalty corner. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kimi Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) stood strong and turned away both shots taken on the play.
- Senior
Cata Days (Buenos Aires, Argentina) had a shot of her own ust a minute later, but again couldn't crack the goalmouth.
- Junior
Haley Hopkins (Springfield, Va.) got on the end of a breakaway in the 21st minute, going one-on-one with the Northeastern goalkeeper, and her classmate
Ella Donahue (Midlothian, Va.) took a shot early in the 22nd minute, but all three shots were turned aside again.
- In the 24th, Northeastern had their most dangerous attempt with a shot towards the open side of the net with Jones knocked down on the other side of the circle, but freshman defender
Audrey Domovich (Hummelstown, Pa.) made a spectacular stick save to earn her first defensive save, and preserve the 0-0 tie. Both teams would have penalty corners in the final five minutes, but neither were able to solve the defensive riddle and the game reached the half still scoreless.
- The Huskies had a breakaway early in the third quarter to threaten the goal, but Jones got her handpad to the high shot and guided it over the net. From there, it was all W&M for the nearly the entire second half.
- The Tribe held possession in the Northeastern half for most all of the third and fourth quarters, but could only muster a pair of shots by senior
Woodard Hooper (Williamsburg, Va.) as the defense stiffened inside the circle.
- With just over 90 seconds left, Northeastern sprung themselves on one final breakaway and scored with a high shot to the far post. W&M pushed upfield quickly, but again, was denied at the edge of the circle and the final horn sounded before the Tribe could take one final shot.
